Act I
Chapter One
Scene One
Sitting at a bar -- police are after him.
He sees a "policeman" come up to him.
Scene Two
The "policeman" is actually Mr. Greenleaf looking for Tom.
He asks him to go see his son and bring him back for business. (This is the Inciting Incident)
Chapter Two
Scene Three
Goes home, sleeps, showers, prepares to meet the Greenleafs in their apartment.
Collects the mail addresses to his fake name -- they were fake checks sent to the IRS.
Scene Four
He makes another demand for a check from some IRS stationary he stole. Calls the person he's demanding money for to make it more legitimate. Then plans to go to Radio City to get a passport.
Chapter Three
Scene Five
Meet the Greenleafs for dinner. Meet Emily Greenleaf. Martinis, then dinner.
Look at photographs of Dickie after dinner. We see pictures of Dickie's girlfriend, Marge. Emily became saddened by the pictures. Mr. Greenleaf sends her to bed and returns for brandy with Tom.
Scene Six
Brandy. Mr. Greenleaf explains how he'll get to Europe.
Tom got sick of listening to Mr. Greenleaf and excused himself, then went home.
Chapter Four
Scene Seven
He went to Marc's to pick up some things at his old apartment.
Went to Cleo's and told her about the trip to Europe.
All of these characters reveal a facet of Tom's personality.
Scene Eight
He bought things for Dickie with the Greenleaf's charge account. He bought something for himself too, but with his own money.
Chapter Five
Scene Nine
Tom went to his room and was surprised that Bob and his friends were in there for a surprise party. He was not happy.
Scene Ten
Paul and Tom went to the deck to get away from the noise. They chatted. The gong for the visitors to leave sounded, Tom said goodbye to Paul.
Scene Eleven
Tom went away until the ship was moving, then went to his cabin when he knew they would be gone and found a clean cabin with a fruit basket from the Greenleafs. He'd never been given a fruit basket.
Chapter Six
Scene Twelve
He buys a hat and thinks about putting the past behind and reinventing himself.
He writes letters to friends and to the Greenleafs, and gives an analysis of Marge but he doesn't send the letters.
He sends a letter to his aunt and thinks about things she has done to him and how angry it makes him. He's glad to be on his own and independent.
Scene Thirteen
Someone asks him to join for bridge. He decides against it. They question his aloofness while he thinks about the present and future Tom Ripley.
